How to Apply

School Direct (tuition route) is open to all high quality graduates. The course is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee, either directly or with a student loan; details are available for each course.

How to apply

All applications for our teacher training programmes must be made online through UCAS Teacher Training. Online applications can be made at: .

The application portal to train starting in September 2022 will open in October. You are able to apply to three initial teacher training providers simultaneously.

Once your application has been submitted, it remains with UCAS until both of your supporting referees have written and submitted their references. Only after this is completed will your application be sent to us. At this point, your application will be considered.

Please visit the UCAS website for more detailed information on the application process.

Completing the application form

Please check your eligibility before applying. The application form will ask you for the following information:

  •     Personal details
  •     Education and qualifications
  •     Experience in schools (employment or volunteered)
  •     Other employment history
  •     Personal statement
  •     The details of two referees

Your personal statement should explain why you want to be a teacher, why you are a strong candidate for initial teacher training and how your experiences to date support this.

If you are still at university, or graduated within the last five years, one of your referees must be someone from your university who can comment on your academic ability and potential. The other reference can come from work or someone who can comment on your character and potential to be a teacher. If you are currently employed in a school, this should be the Headteacher. You must not use friends or family as referees.
